Back bends develop tremendous flexibility and strength. With practical advice and straightforward guidance, Heather sheds light on how to make it more accessible. During the practice an intense heat is created, which purifies and cleanses both the body and mind. By learning to use the whole body the spine, legs, hips, chest and abdomen become free of tension and stress. Back bending is not about bending your back only, but challenging your mind and exploring new ways of moving. We often get stuck in habitual ways of moving or reuse certain aspects of our body that are strong and flexible. In yoga, there is an integration of all body parts, which help to realign weaker muscles, activate the ones that have atrophied and create better balance. In this DVD a variety of back bends are skillfully demonstrated along with traditional postures such as forward bends and twists. Back Bending Series, Advanced Practice

Heather demonstrates the advanced practice of back bending as it evolved from her training under Yogacharya Venkatesha, a champion and expert in back bending. Shot on location in Mysore, South India, Heather illustrates the intermediate to advanced postures. For both teachers and students, the practice is presented in 11 vignettes to develop a self-practice in back bending. Clear and guided instructions are offered on the breath, the physical alignment and focus points for a deeper practice. As an added dimension postures for balance, strength and relaxation are included. Heather masterfully demonstrates the movements that are possible with continual effort, devotion and commitment. Some of the featured vinyasas (a series of movements synchronized with the breath) are:

  • Soorya Namaskara (Advanced Sun Salutations)
• Urdhva Dhanurasna (Wheel)
• Natarajasana (Dancer’s Pose)
• Tripurasana (Three Cities)
